Udo-Obong Pays ₦500,000 Prize to Teen 400m Sensation Aderemi
Sydney 2000 Olympic Games 4x400m gold medalist Enefiok Udo-Obong has fulfilled his ₦500,000 cash prize pledge to Iyanuoluwa Aderemi after the teenager won the women’s 400m at the 2026 Dynamic Athletics Meet.
Udo-Obong had pledged ₦500,000 each to the male and female 400m winners who met the stipulated winning standards of 45.50 seconds for the men and 51.80 seconds for the women.
Seventeen-year-old Aderemi went well under the women’s target, clocking a stunning personal best of 50.95 seconds to win the 400m at the third edition of the Dynamic Athletics Meet at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Lagos.
The performance immediately drew attention to the emerging Akoko, Ondo State athlete and underlined her potential in Nigerian women’s quarter-mile running.
The ₦500,000 presentation took place on Wednesday, September 16, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, with Udo-Obong, Dynamic Athletics Meet Founder and CEO Olabanji Ayegbusi, Aderemi’s coach Adeleye Ogunmakinju, former national head coach Armelia Edet, Lagos State Athletics Performance Director Abiodun Ibrahim and Lagos State athletics coach Bamise Emmanuel in attendance.
Speaking at the presentation, Udo-Obong reiterated his commitment to supporting and encouraging Nigeria’s emerging athletes.
He urged Aderemi to remain focused, continue working hard and build on her breakthrough performance as she prepares for the 2027 season.
The Olympic gold medalist also described Aderemi as a potential future star of Nigerian women’s 400m and called for collective support from stakeholders to help nurture her development.
Udo-Obong currently serves as Technical Adviser to the Saudi Arabia Athletics Federation. He has also remained involved in athletics development in Nigeria, serving as Technical Director at the African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta and the Niger Delta Games in Benin City, Edo State, earlier this year.
Now in its third edition, the Dynamic Athletics Meet continues to provide a platform for emerging and elite athletes to compete alongside each other and gain valuable exposure.
Since its inception in 2024, the meet has produced notable performances and opportunities for athletes, with the 2026 edition drawing praise from participants and stakeholders for its organisation.
Udo-Obong’s fulfilment of the pledge provides another incentive for young athletes to pursue outstanding performances while highlighting the importance of support systems for Nigeria’s next generation of athletes.
