Akinsanmiro Opens Up on Super Eagles Debut, Names Three Nigerian Legends

Super Eagles midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has opened up on his long-awaited Nigeria debut, revealing that former internationals John Obi Mikel and Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, as well as current captain Wilfred Ndidi, have inspired his football journey.

Akinsanmiro made his Super Eagles debut in December 2025 when he started in midfield against Egypt in a preparatory match ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Nigeria lost 2-1, but the performance earned the midfielder a place in the squad for the tournament.

‘It was a dream come true. I have been wanting to be in the national team from the U15s. My family also were so happy about the call-up,’ Akinsanmiro told Sporty TV.

The Monza midfielder, who spent last season on loan before making his move permanent, said he grew up watching some of Nigeria’s most influential midfielders.

‘Growing up, I watched Mikel Obi, Okocha, and Ndidi. These people inspire me,’ he said.

Akinsanmiro particularly highlighted Ndidi’s mentality and leadership after sharing the AFCON experience with the Leicester City midfielder.

‘Being at the AFCON with Ndidi, I can say his mentality, aggressiveness, and discipline, a great leader. He is so humble. This is part of him that inspires me.’

The 20-year-old has also made a positive start to his career at Monza, providing an assist on his debut against Udinese despite the club’s 3-2 defeat at the Stadio Brianteo.

Akinsanmiro is now targeting a recall to the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

At club level, his immediate ambition is to help Monza enjoy a successful campaign.

‘I want to improve myself and be part of anything successful in Monza,’ he added.
