NOC To Hold Good Governance Seminar For Federation Presidents

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), with support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its Olympic Solidarity programme, will hold a two-day Good Governance Seminar for presidents of National Sports Federations in Abuja from September 28 to 29.

The seminar, scheduled for Starview Palace Hotel, Gwarinpa, is aimed at strengthening the leadership and governance capacity of federation presidents and promoting internationally recognised governance standards in Nigerian sports.

The programme will cover sports architecture, leadership principles, core governance principles, responses to governance challenges, the roles and responsibilities of federation presidents and secretary-generals, effective federation management and the identification of corruption in sports.

The seminar will also focus on the Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance within the Olympic Movement, which emphasise clear vision and strategy, sound organisational structures, integrity, ethics, transparency, accountability and effective control mechanisms.

NOC Secretary-General Babatunde Popoola said the seminar would provide federation presidents with an opportunity to share experiences, examine governance challenges and identify practical ways of improving sports administration and service delivery.

The IOC has appointed Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport and a MEMOS instructor in Governance and Sports Management, as the international expert to facilitate the seminar.

NOC President Habu Ahmed Gumel reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of sports administrators through continuous education, workshops and training programmes.

National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko will officially declare the seminar open.
