Kayode: Why I Snubbed Nigeria for Italy

Brentford defender Michael Kayode has revealed why he snubbed Nigeria’s approach and chose to represent Italy at senior international level.

The 22-year-old right-back, who has Nigerian roots, was approached by Nigeria but said he never seriously considered changing his international allegiance after progressing through Italy’s youth teams.

‘I went through the entire process with the Azzurri youth teams, and I never considered changing national teams,’ Kayode said, according to Corriere dello Sport.

‘Nigeria approached me, but playing for Italy is an honour for anyone. I never had any doubts.’

Kayode is now in line to make his senior Italy debut after earning a call-up for the Azzurri’s upcoming international fixtures.

The former Fiorentina defender has established himself in England since joining Brentford and has also developed his long-throw ability, which has become a useful weapon for his club.

Kayode said he already possessed the ability while playing in Italy, but it was not used as much until he moved to England.

‘My throw-ins? We have a dedicated coach. I already had these qualities here in Florence, but it wasn’t used much, then once I arrived in England I started doing this specific work, and it’s used a lot there,’ he said.

Kayode also revealed his admiration for Italy legend Paolo Maldini, naming the former AC Milan defender as a full-back he has always looked up to.
