86 Caps, Five AFCON Titles: Ohale Bows Out of Super Falcons After 16 Years

Osinachi Ohale has announced her retirement from international football after 16 years with the Super Falcons, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable Nigeria career decorated with five Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles.

The 33-year-old defender bows out with 86 caps, having represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups and seven editions of the Women’s AFCON.

Ohale described the decision to leave the international stage as a difficult one but said she was departing with a deep sense of fulfilment after serving several generations of the Super Falcons.

‘After 16 years of wearing the Nigeria jersey, representing my country and giving everything I had for this beautiful sport, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,’ she wrote in her farewell message.

Ohale became an important figure in Nigeria’s continued dominance of women’s football in Africa, collecting five continental titles during her international career.

But for the defender, her legacy goes beyond medals and appearances.

She reflected on the sacrifices, friendships, victories and difficult moments that defined her time with the national team, while describing the opportunity to represent Nigeria as one of the greatest honours of her career.

‘I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria again, every time,’ Ohale said.

She also thanked her teammates, coaches, technical staff, family, loved ones and the Nigeria Football Federation for their support throughout her international career.

The veteran defender reserved special appreciation for the Super Falcons supporters who remained behind the team through both its successes and difficult moments.

‘To the Nigerian fans: thank you for trusting us, supporting us, celebrating with us and staying by our side in good times and bad. Your love made wearing this jersey even more special,’ she wrote.

Although her international playing career is over, Ohale stressed that her bond with the Super Falcons will remain.

‘Today I say goodbye to international football without any regrets, only with gratitude,’ she said.

She summed up her journey with Nigeria through the numbers: 86 caps, 16 years, four World Cups, seven Women’s AFCON tournaments and five continental titles.

‘But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I have had the privilege of serving my country,’ she added.

Ohale concluded her farewell with a message that underlined what the Nigeria jersey has meant to her.

‘The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart. Thank you, Nigeria, for allowing me to live my dream.’
