Atletico Madrid 0 – 0 Club Brugge: Onyedika escapes suspension, free to face Porto October 26

Nigeria’s Raphael Onyedika avoided a third straight yellow card in his side, Club Brugge’s goalless draw Wednesday evening away at Atletico Madrid to secure his and his Belgian club’s passage to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigerian was yellow carded in his last two games against Porto away and Atletico Madrid at home and a third caution would have resulted in him missing the club’s next game, the reverse tie against Portuguese side, FC Porto at the Jan Breydel Stadion in Belgium.

The 21 year old has started all four Champions League games played by his club so far this season and made history with them on Wednesday night.

The Belgian Jupiler League team have now reached the round of 16 for the first time at the 10th attempt, becoming the second Belgian club to do so after Gent in 2015/16.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet was the hero of the night and was been named Player of the Match.

UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel said: “He kept a vital clean sheet for Brugge, using his experience to thwart Griezmann and produce vital saves after his team were reduced to 10 men during the closing stages.”

“I’m glad I was able to play such a big role for my team again. I wasn’t really thinking about a clean sheet. It’s a nice bonus, of course. For that shot by Morata… I just smashed all my body and was able to stop it with my head. The end justifies the means I guess!,” said the goalkeeper.
