Sportsville Award: Brown Ebewele to receive posthumous Award

Tayo Popoola, Lagos Women Run initiator also to be honoured

Former Nigeria Decathlon champion and two-time technical director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Brown Ebewele will be posthumously honoured at this year’s Sportsville Special Recognition Award which holds next month in Lagos.

Revealing this Tuesday in Lagos was Frank Ilaboya, the Chief Executive Officer of Sportsville shortly after receiving the report from the Award Committee.

Ebewele, fondly called ‘Jujuman’ when he was alive died in 2022 after a protracted illness but his contributions to track and field in Nigeria as an athlete, a coach and an administrator has not been forgotten.

The late Ebewele will not be the only track and field person that will be recognised at the award which comes up on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Prestigious Lagos Country Club, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

Mrs Tayo Popoola, the initiator of Lagos Women Run, the first all-women road race in Nigeria will also be honoured.

Others listed to be honoured include Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, wife of Edo State Governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki and former Director General (DG) of the defunct National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji.

Also on the list are the sports-loving General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM), Dr D.K Olukoya, Basketball guru, Col Sam Ahmedu (retd), Proprietor of Naija Ratels, Barrister Paul Edeh, and President of HS Group, Mr Taiye Ige.

Others are Chairman of high flying Remo Stars Football Club, Kunle Soname, foremost golf sponsor Otunba Olusola Adekanola and Nigeria’s new sensation in sports commentary, Emmanuel Etim.

Wrestling Coach to the last Commonwealth Games in Tokyo, Purity Aku and top indigenous kits manufacturer, Tunji Brown, popularly known as Owu Sports also made the list.

In the corporate worId, the duo of Zenith Bank and Supersports would be honored for their role in sports development and sponsorship in Nigeria.
