Abeokuta Welcomes Africa: 33 Nations arrive for CAA U18/U20 Athletics Championship
The ancient city of Abeokuta is buzzing with excitement as the countdown to the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championship narrows. As of 6:13pm today, the Protocol Sub-Committee confirmed the arrival of delegations from 33 African countries, marking a major milestone in the build-up to the continent’s premier youth athletics event.
The championship, scheduled to run from July 16 to 20 at the newly upgraded MKO Abiola International Stadium, will feature over 900 athletes and officials from across Africa.
With the arrival of teams from Egypt, South Sudan, Seychelles, Algeria, Ghana, and more, the city is transforming into a vibrant hub of youthful energy and continental pride.
Chairman of the Protocol Sub-Committee, Arabinrin Aderonke, expressed satisfaction with the smooth reception process at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, where her team has been stationed to welcome and guide incoming delegations.
‘We are thrilled to receive 33 countries so far. This is a testament to Nigeria’s readiness and hospitality. Our teams are fully mobilized to ensure a seamless experience for all participants,’ she said.
The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) President, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, has praised Nigeria’s swift response in hosting the event after Algeria’s withdrawal. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun for their leadership and support in delivering world-class infrastructure and logistics.
With defending champions South Africa vowing to retain their title and host nation Nigeria fielding its largest-ever youth contingent, the stage is set for a thrilling five-day showcase of Africa’s next generation of track and field stars.
