Adeleye Inspires Nigeria to Historic Davis Cup Promotion

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has hailed Nigeria’s tennis community after the country secured promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II with a decisive victory over Uzbekistan at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
Daniel Adeleye emerged as the star of the tie, sealing Nigeria’s triumph with a composed 6–3, 6–4 win over Ilya Ignatov in Sunday’s reverse singles.
His performance gave the hosts an unassailable 3–1 lead, confirming promotion with a match to spare and capping a memorable home campaign.
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade praised the players, officials, and organisers for their efforts, describing the achievement as a reflection of Nigeria’s renewed energy in sports.
‘We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of these players and the Nigeria Tennis Federation. This promotion is proof that Nigerian sports is firmly on the right track,’ he said.
Nigeria’s momentum in the tie was built on a crucial doubles victory, where Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel overcame Khumoyun Sultanov and Denis Istomin in straight sets.
That win swung the contest in Nigeria’s favour after Saturday’s singles had ended level at 1–1. On Sunday, the team showed composure and determination, winning both singles matches to secure promotion.
