Adeshina and Yeboah take high jump rivalry to African Championships in Douala

Nigeria’s Temitope Adeshina and Ghana’s Rose Yeboah will take their rivalry in the women’s high jump event to Douala, Cameroon, venue of the 23rd African Athletics Championships which starts Thursday.

Both Adeshina and Yeboah have been listed by their respective country and will now go head to head for seventh time since they first met two years ago at the African Athletics Championships in Mauritius.

Yeboah and Adeshina both cleared 1.81m on that occasion but it was the Ghananian that won the gold on countback.

Adeshina had the better of Yeboah in the qualifying round at the Commonwealth Games later in 2022 albit both also cleared 1.81m. The Nigerian won the round to qualify for the final while the Ghana lady finished in sixth place to also make it to the final.

In the final, it was Yeboah that had the edge, finishing in seventh position (1.85m) while Adeshina placed 10th (1.81m).

This year, the duo has met thrice with Adeshina edging Yeboah at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. The Ghananian has however won the last two, first at the NCAA Division I West First Rounds in May and at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships about two weeks ago.

The stage is thus set for a continuation over that rivalry in Douala.
