Adeshina Eyes Historic 2.00m Leap at Jarvis Scott Invite in Texas
All eyes will be on Temitope Adeshina this Saturday at the Jarvis Scott Invite inside the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas, as the Nigerian high jumper attempts to etch her name into history.
The 27-year-old student-athlete at Texas Tech University has been Nigeria’s brightest hope in the women’s high jump since 2024, raising expectations that she could become the first Nigerian to clear the elusive 2.00m mark.
Doreen Amata, Nigeria’s former record holder, never surpassed 1.95m, but Adeshina has already soared to 1.97m for three consecutive years. Just three centimeters more would make her the first Nigerian to reach that height, the fourth African ever, and the 55th woman in the world to achieve the milestone.
Adeshina, the reigning NCAA indoor champion, has shown remarkable consistency and determination, and Saturday’s competition could provide the perfect stage for her breakthrough.
Also competing at the Jarvis Scott Invite is fellow Nigerian Success Umukoro, who has been listed for the women’s 200m event.
The 25-year-old sprinter boasts a season’s best of 23.54 seconds and will be eager to run close to her lifetime best of 23.19, which she set on the same track two years ago.
