Adeshina moves top of the world list, breaks Nigeria high jump record

Temitope Adeshina has moved top of the world high jump list after clearing a height of 1.96m Friday at the Corky Classic hosted at Texas Tech’s Sports
Performance Center in Lubbock in Texas.

The 25 year old also broke multiple records on thenight including the 16 year old Nigerian record held by Doreen Amata.

In only her second meet of the season, Adeshina smashed Texas Tech’s indoor high jump record with the 1.96m she cleared.

The Nigerian began the night by adding two centimetres to the 1.83m she cleared a week ago on her indoor debut.

She missed her first attempt at 1.88m but clear it on the second, bringing her just one centimeter away from the school record of 1.89m.

On her next attempt of 1.91m, Adeshina cleared on her first try to become Texas Tech’s new record holder. Then she raised the bar to 1.96m, two centimetres
more than the 1.94m personal best she set last June at the Lagos Athletics Series at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Yaba, Lagos.

After missing the first two attempts, the African Athletics Championships silver medalist cleared on her final attempt to cap off her extraordinary night.

In the process, Adeshina now holds the NCAA and world lead as her final clearance tied the No. 3 all-time NCAA mark.

She also moves to the top of the Nigerian all-time list, besting the 1.95m Amata cleared in 2008.

Adeshina has also moved to number four in the African all-time list behind the South African trio of Hestrie Cloete (2.06m), Desiré Du Plessis (2.01m)and
Charmaine Weavers (2.00m).

She will now focus on making the Paris 2024 Olympics standard of 1.97m as well as become the first Nigerian high jumper to hit the 2m barrier.
