Adeshina told repeat 1.97m national record feat or be among the top 12 to qualify for historic Olympics high jump final
Temitope Adeshina has been told by World Athletics she must repeat her 1.97m Nigerian record feat of she is to fulfil her ambition of becoming the first Nigerian woman to compete in the final of the high jump event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The women’s high jump will get underway on Friday at 10.15 with Adeshina, Nigeria’s lone representative in group B of the two qualifying groups.
According to World Athletics, athletes seeking to be among the 12 qualifiers for the final from the two groups must clear at least 1.97m or be among the top 12 in case less than 12 meet the qualification standard.
Adeshina set a new 1.97m national record at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last June to break the 1.96m record she set in January and the 25 year old must now repeat that feat to be sure of sealing an historic place in the final where her sole focus will now be to become the first Nigerian, man or woman, to win a medal in the event at the Olympics.
Doreen Amata made history as the first Nigerian to compete in the event after she made her debut at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She was also at the Olympics in 2012 and 2016 but did not make the final on each occasion.
