AFCON 2025: Algeria Files Appeal Against Referee After Nigeria Defeat

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has lodged an official appeal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following its 2–0 quarter-final loss to Nigeria, targeting the refereeing of Senegalese official Issa Sy.

In its letter, relayed by journalist Micky Jnr, the FAF outlined several grievances:

An ‘obvious’ penalty not awarded after Farès Chaïbi’s cross early in the match.

Referee Issa Sy’s alleged refusal to greet Algerian players, described as inappropriate conduct.

Six yellow cards issued to Algerian players, which the federation deemed excessive and unjustified.

The FAF went further, calling for Sy’s suspension from officiating for the remainder of AFCON 2025.

Despite the complaints, many observers noted that Algeria was comprehensively outplayed. Nigeria dominated the encounter with greater intensity, tactical discipline, and attacking quality.

While Algeria pointed to debatable refereeing decisions, Nigeria could also have claimed a penalty after Ramy Bensebaini’s goal-line clearance, which some argued crossed the line.

The appeal has sparked debate, with critics suggesting it is unlikely to succeed. CAF refereeing has faced scrutiny throughout AFCON 2025, but in this case, analysts argue the officiating was not the decisive factor in Algeria’s elimination.

Social media reactions have even mocked the move, pointing out that Nigeria’s superiority was clear on the pitch.
