AFCON 2025: Chelle Names Unchanged Side for Algeria Game
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has opted for continuity, naming an unchanged starting XI for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash against Algeria in Marrakech.
The attacking trio of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams will once again lead the line after their explosive performance in the round of 16, where Nigeria defeated Mozambique 4–2.
Lookman and Adams each contributed two assists and a goal, while Osimhen struck twice, benefitting from Lookman’s creativity.
Chelle has also kept faith with his midfield, anchored by captain Wilfred Ndidi, alongside Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka. The trio will be tasked with controlling the tempo and providing balance against Algeria’s dynamic midfield.
At the back, Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi continue as the central defensive pairing, while Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi retain their full-back roles.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali starts for the fourth time in the competition, aiming for his second clean sheet after being rested in the final group game against Uganda.
The Super Eagles are seeking redemption against the Fennecs of Algeria, who denied Nigeria a place in the 2019 AFCON final courtesy of a dramatic last-minute free-kick from Riyad Mahrez.
Mahrez, who has already scored three times in this year’s tournament, will once again lead Algeria’s attack against Chelle’s men.
