Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional close to a remarkable 15‑year journey with the Super Eagles.
In a heartfelt message, the former captain reflected on a career defined by loyalty, service, and historic achievements.
‘I wore this badge with pride for 15 years,’ Musa said as he confirmed the end of his national team career. ‘From a 17‑year‑old boy answering every call 🇳🇬 to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances.’
Musa’s rise from a teenage debutant to a national icon is one of Nigerian football’s most enduring stories. He became an Africa Cup of Nations champion in 2013, played in two FIFA World Cups, and scored four goals on the global stage, making him Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history.
His goals against Argentina and Iceland remain some of the most memorable moments in the country’s football journey.

Musa spoke with deep emotion about the responsibility of wearing the armband, describing it as a role that taught him patience, leadership, and selflessness.
‘Wearing the armband taught me a lot, about responsibility, patience, and putting others first. It was never about being in charge, but about helping the team, supporting younger players, and standing up for the badge. Even during difficult times and criticism, my commitment to Nigeria never changed.’
He recalled his early years, when he was invited simultaneously to the U‑20, U‑23, and senior national teams.
‘I was young, still learning, and always travelling, but I never complained. Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about.’
Musa expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, backroom staff, administrators, and millions of fans who supported him throughout his journey.
‘Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning,’ he said. ‘To the fans at home and abroad, your support meant more to me than you know.’
As he steps away from the international stage, Musa says he does so with peace and fulfilment. ‘I know I gave my best. I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken.’
