AFN to hold yet another extra-ordinary Congress over 2025 Elections
Less than 10 days after it held what it hilariously termed an ’emergency extraordinary congress’, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has fixed Tuesday, May 27 (Children’s Day) for another extra-ordinary congress.
According to the notice of meeting sent to state athletics associations and other stakeholders and signed by Israel Inwang, the Federation’s Secretary General, the extra-ordinary congress is scheduled to hold at the Gateway Games 2024 National Sports Festival secretariat at 10:00am on Tuesday in Abeokuta, capital of Ogun state.
The congress’ major agenda is the ‘Discussion on 2025 AFN Elections and New Timeline’ after the National Sports Commission advised the Federation to put the elections on hold as it coincided with the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival.
Sportsnow.com.ng can however report that the extra-ordinary congress was not convened by AFN President, Tonobok Okowa pursuant to article 10.1.7 of the disputed 2023 Constitution of the AFN.
For the avoidance of doubt, article 10.1.7 reads inter-alia: ‘An extraordinary congress shall be convened by the President or 2/3 of the Board (in case where it is required and the president refused to do) as the case may be for the amendments of the Constitution or the consideration of any urgent matter. Notice of 15 working days shall be given.’
It is clear there are just four working days between the time the extra-ordinary congress was convened (Thursday May 22, 2025 and Tuesday, May 27, 2025).
