African Union Sports Council Delegates Storm Abuja for Nigeria’s 2031 African Games Bid
Nigeria’s ambition to host the 2031 African Games takes centre stage next week as delegates from the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) arrive in Abuja for an official inspection of facilities and infrastructure.
The visit, scheduled for March 30-31, 2026, marks a decisive step in the country’s campaign to secure Africa’s premier multi-sport event.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed the bid, stressing that Nigeria’s track record in staging major international competitions and its ongoing investment in sports development make it a strong contender.
The inspection will allow AUSC officials and technical experts to assess Nigeria’s readiness, from stadiums and training centres to accommodation and transport networks.
This latest push comes after Nigeria’s unsuccessful attempt to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which was awarded to India. Determined to bounce back, the NSC believes the African Games offer a chance to consolidate Nigeria’s status as a continental sporting powerhouse.
Yet beneath the optimism lies a critical reality. Nigeria currently has only one FIFA-approved stadium fit to host international matches, while many of its tartan tracks are substandard and fail to meet global standards for elite competition.
The lack of modern infrastructure for elite athlete training has been a recurring concern. Rising sprint sensation Favour Ashe, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects, recently lamented the poor facilities and hinted at switching allegiance to oil-rich Qatar, where investment in sports infrastructure is far more advanced.
As the AUSC delegation begins its inspection, the spotlight is firmly on Abuja to showcase Nigeria’s organizational capacity and prove that it can deliver a world-class Games in 2031, while also confronting the urgent need to modernize its sporting infrastructure.
