AIU Age Discrepancy Report, Aku Aghazu’s Eligibility to Dominate AFN Board Meeting Agenda
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) will hold its virtual board meeting on Sunday, December 21, 2025, with the Athletics Integrity Unit’s (AIU) letter on age discrepancies among Nigerian athletes topping the agenda.
The AIU has asked Nigeria to explain why 17 athletes, including 16 who competed at the African U18 and U20 Championships in Abeokuta earlier this year, have multiple dates of birth.
The meeting is expected to begin with a minute’s silence in honor of Mantha Mohammed, a former board member who passed away earlier this month.
Beyond the AIU matter, the board will deliberate on Nigeria’s participation in major continental and global events scheduled for 2026, including the World Indoors, World Relays, Youth Olympics, Kids Athletics Series, CAA Region 2 Championships, AFN Golden League, National Trials, and the Commonwealth Games.
Discussions will also focus on the availability of Nigerian athletes based in the United States, particularly student-athletes, following new visa restrictions imposed by U.S. authorities.
The AFN’s 2025 Activities Report will be reviewed, while another contentious issue, the eligibility of Aku Aghazu to serve on the federation’s executive board despite not meeting constitutional requirements, will be debated.
Stakeholders remain firm in their demand that she either resign or be removed.
