Akwa Ibom, Ondo Intensify Preparations for 2nd Niger Delta Games

Preparations for the 2nd Niger Delta Games (NDG) are gathering momentum across the region as states intensify efforts ahead of their final selection processes at the State Finals.

From Cross River to Akwa Ibom, Imo to Bayelsa, and Delta, Edo and Ondo, registration has advanced to the stage of uploading completed forms to the Games’ official portal, signalling a smooth transition into the next phase.

In Akwa Ibom, the State Liaison Committee, led by Elder Paul Bassey, who also serves as Commissioner for Sports, expressed satisfaction with the concluded registration exercise.

He noted that athletes and officials responded positively, describing the process as seamless and reflective of the state’s early commitment to ensuring a strong presence at the Games.

Training camps are already buzzing with activity, with athletes across various disciplines undergoing intensive preparations. According to Bassey, the mood in camp is upbeat, with participants demonstrating enthusiasm, focus, and competitiveness.

Meanwhile, in Ondo State, the NDG Liaison Committee convened a strategic meeting at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure to fine-tune preparations. The session brought together representatives of the state sports council and various associations.

Committee Chairman Henry Omoyofunmi, who doubles as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, explained that the engagement was designed to harmonise plans and guarantee a successful outing in Benin.

He emphasised that the Games would serve as a platform to discover and nurture young talents, foster unity, and strengthen grassroots sports development across the Niger Delta. Stakeholders pledged their full cooperation, particularly in mobilisation efforts.

Reports from other states, including Cross River, Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Edo, indicate that coaches and technical officials are closely monitoring progress, fine-tuning programmes to ensure athletes are primed for peak performance.

With the Games drawing closer, the blend of meticulous planning, athlete readiness, and positive energy suggests a highly competitive event, as states prepare to showcase their sporting depth and talent on the Niger Delta stage.

The 2nd Niger Delta Games will take place from February 20 to 27 in Benin. Bayelsa, who emerged overall champions of the inaugural edition held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in April 2025, will be looking to defend their crown against strong challengers from across the region.
