Alfred and Tebogo named female and male athletes of Paris 2024 Olympics

Paris 2024 athletics Olympic champions Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia and Letsile Tebogo of Botswana have won the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) award for best female and male athletes of Paris 2024 at a ceremony on Wednesday in Cascais, in the Lisbon District of Portugal.

Alfred, 23, made history as the first athlete from Saint Lucia to win an Olympic gold when she stormed to the 100m gold in 10.72 and finished behind Gabby Thomas in the 200m for her second medal at the Games, a silver.

Tebogo on his part also made history as the first African man to win a sprint title at the Olympics when he scorched to a 19.46 finish to win the 200m gold.

The 22-year-old also anchored the Botswana 4x400m relay team to a silver medal finish, running a new 2:54.53 African record which is also the second fastest in the world in the all-time list behind USA’s 2:54.29 world record achieved in 1993.

Tebogo says the recognition by ANOC meant a lot to him and warned that Africa is coming to dominate the world.

‘It means a lot to me to be recognised by ANOC, it motivates me to keep on pushing,’ Tebogo said at the awards.
