All eyes on back to form Amusan at Golden Spike in Ostrava
Tobi Amusan will command attention once again on Tuesday as she headlines the women’s 100m hurdles at the Golden Spike in Ostrava, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.
Her appearance follows a blistering 12.24-second finish at the Meeting de Paris Diamond League last week—her second-fastest time ever, behind only her stunning 12.12 world record set during her 2022 World Championship triumph in Oregon.
After a disappointing outing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she failed to make the final, Amusan’s resurgence comes at a time when the global hurdles scene is heating up.
The emergence of Masai Russell, who clocked a stunning 12.17 lifetime best this year, and Tia Jones, who posted 12.19, has intensified competition at the top.
Add to that the threat posed by athletes like Ackera Nugent (12.24 PB), Grace Stark (12.21), Samba Mayela, Devynne Charlton, and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, and the hurdles hierarchy has rarely been this stacked.
Though those names won’t line up against her in Ostrava, Amusan won’t have it all her own way. Several athletes in the field have dipped under the 13-second barrier this season, including Hungary’s Anna Tóth (12.78), Slovakia’s Viktória Forster (12.79), Austria’s Karin Strametz (12.81), and Italy’s Elena Carraro (12.84). Ireland’s Sarah Lavin, who owns a 12.62 PB, also returns to action.
With a season-best far ahead of her competitors, Amusan enters as the overwhelming favorite. But with multiple sub-13 hurdlers on the line and the memory of recent setbacks still fresh, Tuesday’s race offers more than just another victory lap—it’s a chance to restate her case at the top of global sprint hurdling.
