Amusan and Enekwechi fly Nigeria’s flag in World Athletics top 100
Nigeria’s track and field pride, Tobi Amusan and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, have stormed back into the World Athletics Top 100 Rankings, reaffirming their status as the country’s elite performers in 2025.
Amusan, the reigning African queen of the 100m hurdles, has made a remarkable resurgence this season.
After ending 2024 ranked 132nd in the women’s overall category, she briefly slipped to 164th in April. But by June, she had clawed her way back to 129th, and by late June, she cracked the top 100, landing at 88th.
Her momentum continued with a climb to 86th in early July, before settling back at 88th in the latest update on July 15.
Her rise was fueled by a season’s best of 12.24s in the 100m hurdles at the Paris Diamond League, where she finished second behind Grace Stark.
Meanwhile, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Nigeria’s shot put titan, has been the lone male representative in the men’s top 100. After finishing 2024 at 104th, he re-entered the elite bracket in February and has hovered around the 100th mark since. In the latest July 15 update, Enekwechi is ranked 100th, down slightly from 99th the previous week.
His consistency in the shot put circle, including a record-breaking 22.10m throw at the Prefontaine Classic, has not only earned him a spot among the world’s best but also cemented his place in Nigeria’s all-time top 10 performances.
Together, Amusan and Enekwechi remain Nigeria’s only athletes in the global top 100 rankings, showcasing resilience, elite performance, and national pride on the world stage.
