Amusan drops out of women’s top 100 in post-Diamond League world rankings
Ofili supplants Brume as Nigeria's number two woman
World 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan has dropped out of the women’s overall top 100m list in the World Athletics world rankings following the update after the conclusion of the 2024 Diamond League.
The Nigerian was ranked 84th in the world and ninth in her event before the Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium last weekend but her post-Paris Olympics no show means the 27-year-old will drop in ranking but no one thought the athlete that was on the lips of everyone just about a year ago could not be counted among the top best 100m women athletes in 2024.
The petite Nigeria, African and Commonwealth Games champion is now ranked 13th in the 100m hurdles, her first trip outside the top 10 since January 2019 when World Athletics started ranking athletes and 132nd in the overall women’s ranking.
Amusan was ranked number one in the 100m hurdles after she won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA in 2022 and stayed on as the best in the high hurdles for over a year, losing it to Jasmine Camacho-Quinn after she failed to successfully defend her World title in Budapest.
Long jumper, Ese Brume also dropped from fourth to sixth in the long jump and from 130th to 189th in the overall women’s rankings.
Brume also lost her position as the second highest ranked Nigerian woman after Amusan. That honour now belongs to Olympics 200m finalist, Favour Ofili who remains ninth in the 200m and 139th in the overall women’s rankings.
Ruth Usoro is fourth while Prestina Ochonogor completes the Nigerian top five.
In the individual events, Ofili is highest ranked Nigerian in the 100m and 200m events while Esther Elo Joseph ranks above Ella Onojuvwevwo in the 400m.
Abasiono Akpan tops in the 400m hurdles, Temitope Adeshina in the high jump, Chioma Onyekwere in the Discus throw and Oyesade Olatoye in the Hammer throw.
In Africa, Amusan (100m hurdles), Brume (long jump), Onyekwere (Discus throw), Olatoye (Hammer throw) and Adeshina (high jump) are ranked first in their respective events.
