Amusan opts for 100m to open 2025 season at Velocity Fest 16 in Kingston, Jamaica
World 100m hurdles record holder, Tobiloba Amusan will open her season 2025 campaign over the 100m at the Velocity Fest 16, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event at the Ashenheim Stadium at Jamaica College in Kingston on Saturday.
The Nigerian has raised expectations of another record setting, podium placing season after news broke out that she has been training with highly revered Jamaican coach, Glen Mills, the man who coached the great Usain Bolt to multiple World and Olympic gold medals as well as multiple world records.
Amusan, who will be 28 in April has been drawn to run in heat three with former Jamaican World U20 silver medalist, Serena Cole her major hurdle.
The Nigerian is fastest in the heat with the 11.10 lifetime best she ran in Gainesville, Florida, USA in April 2023 while Cole is two hundreth of a second behind with her 11.13 personal best achieved three years ago in Kingston, Jamaica.
Last year, Amusan ran 11.26 in the 100m as her personal season’s best and the Jamaican 11.24.
The reigning Nigeria, African Games and Commonwealth Games champion is expected to cruise into the final where she may face more established sprinters like Anthonique Strachan of Jamaica who will be running in the second heat of the opening round and home girls, Jura Lanconia Levy and Kasheika Cameron.
Amusan will be looking ahead of the event on Saturday to the Diamond League and the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September. She will be seeking to reclaim the Diamond League and World Championships 100m hurdles title she lost in 2024 and 2023 respectively.
