Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan narrowly secured her place in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia after a nerve-wracking semifinal performance on Saturday.
Running in the first of two semifinal heats, the reigning world record holder clocked 12.48 seconds, finishing fourth behind Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent (12.34), Danielle Williams (12.43), and the USA’s Tonea Marshall (12.47).
With only the top three from each heat earning automatic qualification, Amusan was forced to wait for the outcome of the second semifinal to determine her fate.
Her time of 12.48 seconds ultimately proved fast enough to secure one of the three non-automatic qualifying spots, edging out Alia Armstrong (12.50) and former world record holder Kendra Harrison.
Amusan now advances to the final later today, where she will face a formidable lineup including: Masai Russell (USA), Olympic champion, who qualified with 12.36, Ackera Nugent (JAM), Danielle Williams (JAM) and Tonea Marshall (USA).
Others are Jamaican Megan Tapper, the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, returning to form at the right time and the new Flying Dutchwoman, Nadine Visser who stunned the field with a 12.28 national and meeting record to win her semifinal heat
The final promises to be one of the most competitive of the season, with Amusan aiming to defend her reputation as one of the world’s elite hurdlers and secure crucial points toward Diamond League Final qualification in Zurich.
