Annabelle Fasuba moves sixth on British all-time list at under-17 level
Teenage sprint star Annabelle Fasuba has stormed into the British all-time rankings after opening her indoor season with a blistering new personal best over 60m.
The 14-year-old double English Schools’ champion clocked 7.44 seconds to win the women’s event at the Sutcliffe Indoor 60s in London, a time that places her sixth on the British under-17 all-time list.
She now sits just behind World Championship medallist Amy Hunt, and only 0.1 seconds shy of the national record set last month by Gateshead’s Celine Obinna-Alo.
It was Fasuba’s debut at under-17 level, though she will compete in the under-16 age group during the outdoor season. Her rise has been rapid: at under-15 level she broke the British 100m record with 11.51 seconds and equalled Katherine Merry’s long-standing 200m mark of 23.72 seconds.
Annabelle’s younger sister Oluwatoyin also impressed at the Sutcliffe Indoor meeting, winning the under-12 girls’ category with times of 8.90 seconds in the heats and 9.05 seconds in the final.
The sisters are daughters of Olusoji Fasuba, the former African 100m record holder with a time of 9.85 seconds. He remains the only man to win the African Championships 100m gold three times in succession, the first African to claim the World Indoor 60m title, and an Olympic bronze medallist in the 4x100m relay at Athens 2004.
Annabelle’s latest achievement confirms her status as one of Britain’s brightest young sprint talents, while the Fasuba name continues to resonate strongly in world athletics.
