Anthony Joshua SUV Crash Case Adjourned to March 17, Prosecutors Cite Need for Witnesses

The magistrate court in Sagamu has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV that crashed while conveying former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, to March 17, 2026.

Kayode appeared before the court on Wednesday to face charges bordering on reckless driving.

However, during proceedings, R.D. Kadiri, counsel representing the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), informed the court that prosecutors required additional time to gather evidence and secure witnesses.

Kadiri explained that the case file had already been forwarded to the Ogun State DPP by the police, but more preparation was necessary before trial could commence.

Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun subsequently adjourned the matter to March 17, extending what has become a series of delays in the case.

The trial had previously been adjourned on January 20, when Richard Nigiwe, counsel to the police, requested time to duplicate the case file and present it to the attorney-general of Ogun State through the DPP for legal advice.

Defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun objected at the time, arguing that since three witnesses were already present in court, the trial should begin immediately.

Magistrate Somefun nevertheless ruled in favour of adjournment, directing that the case be duplicated and sent to the attorney-general.

The case stems from a tragic crash on December 29, 2025, when the SUV carrying Joshua and three associates collided with a stationary truck near the Sinoma area of Sagamu.

Joshua survived with minor injuries, but two of his close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, lost their lives in the accident.

Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment for his injuries.

The trial of his driver, Kayode, now hangs on the prosecution’s ability to present sufficient evidence, with the next hearing scheduled for March 17.
