Awoniyi, Iheanacho, Onuachu Omitted as Chelle Names 31-Man Eagles Squad for Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s Head Coach Eric Sekou Chelle has unveiled a provisional 31-man squad for next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa, with notable absentees including forwards Taiwo Awoniyi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Paul Onuachu.

The trio, long considered integral to Nigeria’s attacking setup, have been left out as Chelle opts for a refreshed lineup in what is widely regarded as a must-win double-header for the Super Eagles.

The squad features a blend of seasoned internationals and emerging talents, led by team captain William Troost-Ekong and first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Defenders Olaoluwa Aina and Calvin Bassey return to fortify the backline, while midfield stalwarts Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi are expected to anchor the center of the pitch.

Up front, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Simon Moses headline a potent attacking force.

Also included are promising newcomers such as goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, defenders Bright Osayi-Samuel and Benjamin Fredericks, midfielders Raphael Onyedika and Christantus Uche, and forwards Nathan Tella and Cyriel Dessers—whose standout performances at the 2025 Unity Cup in London earned him a recall.

The Super Eagles will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 6, before traveling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa on Tuesday, September 9.

Nigeria currently sits fourth in the qualifying group and must secure maximum points from both fixtures to remain in contention for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigerian Football Federation has also expressed hope that FIFA will take disciplinary action against South Africa for allegedly fielding an ineligible player earlier in the campaign. Should sanctions be imposed, Nigeria could benefit from a points deduction against their rivals.

However, Coach Chelle has emphasized that his team must focus on winning on the pitch, regardless of external developments.

The Super Eagles will begin preparations in Uyo on Monday, September 1, with full training sessions scheduled to commence immediately upon arrival.

The camp is expected to foster tactical cohesion and mental readiness ahead of what could be a defining moment in Nigeria’s World Cup journey.
