Awoniyi’s penalty shootout miss sends Forest out of Carabao Cup

Taiwo Awoniyi’s miss from six yards during the penalty shootout between his club, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United at the City Ground has ensured an early exit from the Carabao Cup at the second round for Nuno Santo’s men.

The Nigerian, who started his first game for the club in three games across all competitions was on for the entire duration of the match and missed his side’s fifth penalty that could have given the club the lead and put pressure on the Magpies’ Sean Longstaff who scored the fifth and decisive penalty for the visitor.

Awoniyi will now look to start his first Premier League game on Saturday when they host Wolves.

At the JobServe Community Stadium, Frank Onyeka also made his first start of the season for Brentford and was on for 89 minutes as the Bees stung their host, Colchester United 1-0 to move to the next round of the competition.

Joe Aribo was however rested when Southampton went, saw and conquered their host, Cardiff City 5-3 at the Cardiff City Stadium. Paul Onuachu was not listed for the third straight game amid speculations he could be sold before the transfer window closes on Friday.

In Germany, Victor Boniface served out his one match ban for an unsportsmanlike conduct as his club defeated their host, Carl Zeiss Jena
1-0 at the Ernst Abbe Sportfeld. Nathan Tella was on for 68 minutes in the game.

In Spain, Umar Sadiq was subbed on for Sheraldo Becker on 66 minutes but he could not rescue his club, Real Sociedad from crashing 2-1 to visiting
Deportivo Alaves at the Reale Arena.

This would be Sociedad’s second loss in three LaLiga games so far this season with Sadiq yet to start and score.
