Big opportunity for Nigerian coaches as World Athletics opens Coaches’ Commission nominations
World Athletics has officially opened nominations for its newly formed Coaches’ Commission, giving elite coaches around the world, including Nigeria, a chance to shape the future of global athletics.
According to the media release on World Athletics’ website, this commission will serve as a powerful voice for coaches, helping guide governing body’s decisions on high-performance strategies, international competitions, and elite coaching standards.
It’s a chance for coaches to influence policy, share best practices, and represent their region on the world stage.
According to the media release, the commission will run a two-year term from November 2025 to 2027, with members selected by the World Athletics Council.
It will include 8 to 14 members, at least two of whom will be Council Members, and the World Athletics President will serve as an ex-officio member.
For Nigerian coaches, this is a golden moment to step forward. Rotimi Obajimi, a respected figure in Nigerian athletics, once rose through the ranks of the IAAF (now World Athletics) as a coaching lecturer and course director. His journey shows that Nigerian coaches can compete and contribute at the highest level.
Now, with this new commission being formed, it’s time for the next generation of Nigerian coaches to follow in his footsteps, and go even further.
