Breaking: AFN Second Vice President Akuchukwu Aghazu Resigns!
Akuchukwu Aghazu, the Second Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has resigned her position and seat on the Board of the Federation with immediate effect.
Her resignation was formally communicated in a letter she addressed to the AFN President and ‘distinguished colleagues’, in which she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed her commitment to governance, transparency, and athlete-centered progress.
Following her resignation, Mrs. Aghazu has been removed from the Federation’s official WhatsApp platform in line with administrative procedures. The National Sports Commission (NSC), which illegally forced her to the AFN Board in June 2025, has also reportedly accepted her resignation.
Her appointment at the time had drawn attention because it did not fulfill the criteria set out in the AFN constitution and was made directly by the NSC.
In addition to her role as Second Vice President, Mrs. Aghazu simultaneously held critical positions as Head of the AFN Road Race Commission and member of the Elite Athletes Performance Board, a combination that stakeholders had described as a clear conflict of interest.
In her resignation letter, Mrs. Aghazu noted that she remains proud of the achievements made during her tenure and pledged to continue supporting athletics and sports development in Nigeria through other avenues of service.
