Brume leaps over Mihambo to place fourth at the Golden Gala in Florence
Nigeria and African long jump record holder, Ese Brume got the better of reigning World and Olympic champion, Malaika Mihambo for the first time in 11 appearances but her 6.58m leap was not enough to win at the Golden Gala, the third Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season, in Florence on Friday.
The 27 year old thought her 6.58m third round effort was going to get her the third spot and six points but Tara Davis-Woodhall’s 6.74m fourth round effort saw her moved into second position behind winner, Larissa Iapichino of Italy whose first round leap of 6.79m was never beterred by any athlete on the field.
Brume had never leapt farther than Mihambo in their past 10 meetings dating back to the Rio Olympics in Brazil where the Germany finished fourth ahead of the Nigerian.
The Nigerian will be looking to do much better when the long jump event returns on July 2 in Stockholm, Sweden, the seventh leg of the competition.
Brume was second best at the World indoor and outdoor championships in Belgrade and Oregon respectively last year and she will be hoping to go a step further at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary this August.
