Camacho-Quinn runs 12.47 to win as Simbine loses first 100m race at Gyulai Istvan Memorial in three appearances
World leader, Kishane Thompson wins 100m event in 9.91, Adekoya wins 400m hurdles
Reigning Olympic 100m hurdles queen, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico stormed to her second win over the 100m hurdles in less than a week after running 12.47 to win Tuesday at the at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, one of the 2024 World Athletics Continental Tour Gold events.
The 27 year old ran a 12.39 personal season’s best to win at the Fanny Blankers-Koen’s Games in Hengelo at the weekend and made it two on the bounce Tuesday in Hungary to announce her determination to successfully defend her Olympic title in Paris at the Olympics.
2019 world champion, Nia Ali came second in 12.54 with Ecuador’s Maribel Vanessa Caicedo third in 12.69.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Akani Simbine on Tuesday failed to win the 100m event for the first time in three appearances at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial.
The former African record holder has ran new lifetime bests (9.89 and 9.84) in his two previous appearances at the meeting but came in third (10.01) this time around behind world leader in the event, Kishane Thompson of Jamaica (9.91) and Botswana’s Lestile Tebogo who ran inside 10 seconds (9.99) for the first time this season with less than a month to the start of the athletics event of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
It was however not a Jamaican sweep of the 100m titles after American, Tamara Davis, sped past three Jamaicans to win the women’s title.
She ran 11.00 to win ahead of the three Jamaicans in the race viz Tia Clayton (11.06), Krystal Sloley (11.15) and Natasha Morrison (11.19).
Nigeria-born Bahrainian, Kemi Adekoya ran 54.13 to win the women’s 400m hurdles.
