Can Ndidi break record for most assists in a Premier League season by a Nigerian?
Wilfred Ndidi has set up four goals in just the first seven matches in a Premier League season and has raised expectations that the 27-year-old could break the record of the most assists provided by a Nigerian in a Premier League season.
The Leicester City midfielder is playing in a more advanced and attacking role for his club after he was converted from a defensive one by Enzo Maresca who was the coach of the Foxes when they dropped to the Sky Bet Championship after the 202/23 season.
The Nigerian flourished in that role as he provided five assists and scored four goals in 32 games in English football’s second tier league.
With Maresca moving to Chelsea without Ndidi, Steve Copper, his successor has retained the Nigerian in that role, and he has delivered with four assists in his first seven games back in the Premier League, one third of the nine he provided in his first six years in the Premier League.
Ndidi has already broken the record of the most assists provided by a Nigerian in the first six games of a Premier League season and he will be looking for just three more to be joint record holder with Alex Iwobi (2022/23) and Peter Osaze Odemwingie (2010/2011) as Nigerians with the most assists in a single Premier League season.
Iwobi, according to the Premier League website, holds the record as the Nigerian with the most Premier League assists in history with 30 but the Fulham midfielder has only provided one this term.
