Cheetahs of Republic of Benin land in Uyo seeking to clip Eagles’ wings again
The Cheetahs of Republic of Benin are now in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital where they will face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a 2025 African Nations Cup qualifier.
The team, led by former Nigeria boss, Gernot Rohr, landed around 6.10pm at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, on a chartered flight.
The Cheetahs are staying at the Ibom Icon hotel and, as per the rule, will have a feel of the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo, venue of the match later on Friday evening.
Rohr led the Cheetahs to defeat the Super Eagles in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier and the German believes he can make it a second straight win for his side in Uyo, a ground he is familiar with following his five-year stint as coach of the Super Eagles.
He was named Nigeria’s coach in August 2016 and left in December 2021.
‘It’s another rematch against Nigeria. It will be three more games with them [including the upcoming return match, counting for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers]. It’s a rematch against a very good team. But we have gained confidence and we know we can beat them,’ Rohr told reporters when he unveiled his squad for the game against Nigeria in Uyo.
The match will start from 5pm.
