Chelsea 2-0 Dortmund: Sterling makes Champions League history, hails Chelsea performance
Much maligned Potter also makes history with the Blues
Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling has hailed the Blues’ performance as massive after making history in the 2-0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund in their UEFA Champions League tie at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
Sterling scored the first goal of the game in the 2-0 that ensured Chelsea have now progressed from five UEFA Champions League knockout stage ties after losing the first leg, the joint-most of any team in the competition’s history (Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid also five).
Since his debut in the competition in September 2014, the 28 year old has been involved in more Champions League goals than any other Englishman (27 goals, 17 assists), while only Wayne Rooney (30) has ever netted more in the competition amongst his compatriots.
Sterling’s goal is also his seventh for Chelsea in 26 games across all competitions and 27 in 80 UEFA Champions League games for Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea
The forward told BT Sport after the game that gave Chelsea a 2-1 aggregate win that they had to dig deep for the win.
“It was a massive performance. We had to dig deep. We took our chances. We felt as a team we could do it.
“I had a little mis-kick with the first touch but it landed perfectly and allowed us to build on that for our performance.”
On Kai Havertz retaking the penalty: “I thought about taking it the second time but I was so confident in Kai to put it in the back of the net.”
Meanwhile, Graham Potter has become the first English manager to lead Chelsea to a Champions League knockout game win. Frank Lampard’s Blues lost both legs against Bayern Munich at this stage in 2019-20.
