Chelsea’s Fightback Ends in Paris 5-2 Humiliation

Chelsea’s Champions League hopes took a huge hit in Paris as a late collapse saw them beaten 5-2 by PSG in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

For 75 minutes, the Blues had matched the European champions blow for blow, twice coming from behind through goals from Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernández.

But goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen’s costly error, a misplaced pass straight to Bradley Barcola that led to Vitinha’s lob, opened the door for PSG to take control.

From there, substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia stole the show.

The Georgian curled in a stunning strike from the edge of the box before adding a composed sidefoot finish in stoppage time, leaving Chelsea with a mountain to climb at Stamford Bridge.

The night had begun with Barcola smashing in an early opener, only for Gusto to level with a low drive.

Ousmane Dembélé restored PSG’s lead before half-time with a composed finish, but Fernández equalised again after pouncing on Desire Doué’s mistake.

Luis Enrique then turned to his bench, and Kvaratskhelia delivered emphatically, ensuring PSG’s thrilling attack outgunned Chelsea’s spirited effort.

Kvaratskhelia was deservedly named Player of the Match. The UEFA Technical Observer Group said: “He came on with the game at 2-2 and made the difference with a devastating performance.”

This is the second time Chelsea have conceded five goals in a UEFA competition match after a 5-1 defeat away from home against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2000.

It is also the second time PSG have scored five goals against an English team in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. after their 5-3 victory against Tottenham on Matchday 5.
