Chioma Okafor commits international future to Nigeria

Rising football talent Chioma Okafor has officially pledged her international allegiance to Nigeria, ending speculation over her potential involvement with Malawi’s national team setup.

The University of Connecticut striker, born in Malawi to a Nigerian father and Malawian mother, had been on the radar of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and was previously invited to feature for the Scorchers in friendly matches against Zambia earlier this year. However, she was unable to participate due to academic obligations.

In a statement released by FAM, the association confirmed that following discussions with Okafor’s parents on June 18, 2025, they had received formal communication from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirming the player’s decision to represent Nigeria at the international level.

Despite her Malawian roots, Okafor has yet to play for Malawi at any level, leaving the door open for the NFF to secure her services. The confirmation marks a significant boost for Nigeria’s women’s football program, adding another promising forward to their growing pool of international talent.
