Chukwueze: ‘I Took the Opportunity’ in Fulham’s 2-1 Win at Tottenham
Fulham winger Samuel Chukwueze delivered a standout performance on his first Premier League start as Marco Silva’s side claimed a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday night’s London derby.
The Nigerian international, who joined Fulham on a season-long loan from AC Milan last summer, had previously made five substitute appearances but was handed a starting role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and made it count.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Chukwueze admitted the opportunity came unexpectedly: ‘I wasn’t expecting it today. But I was focusing on doing the hard work. The last months have been a bit difficult but I kept my head down and kept working. And I took the opportunity today.’
He credited his teammates for their support and the collective effort: ‘They push me really hard in training and keep me motivated. We are so proud of the result today. We worked for it on the training pitch. The players gave everything on the field. We had to defend with all our life. This win is very, very important.’
Chukwueze’s impact was clear in the first half, where he registered the most touches in the opposition box (6), created the most chances (2), and completed the most take-ons (2).
His assist against Spurs means he has now set up goals in consecutive Premier League matches, taking his tally to three for the season. That figure places him at the top of the Nigerian assist chart in the Premier League, one ahead of Fulham teammate Alex Iwobi.
