Confirmed: AFN to hold extraordinary congress to approve change of venue for Elective Congress

Confirms no constitutional amendment took place at Bayelsa Congress

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has fixed Monday May 12, 2025 for what it calls an ’emergency extraordinary congress’ principally to effect the change in the venue  of its Elective Congress from Asaba in Delta state to Abuja, the Federal Capital territory. Athletics stakeholders, including several congress members had kicked against the choice of Asaba, Delta state, the home state of the incumbent President, Tonobok Okowa who is also seeking re-election as well as two other candidates. Many feared other candidates from outside Delta state may be given the Shehu Dikko treatment at the Congress. Dikko, now chairman of the National Sports Commission,  was denied access to Warri, venue of the Nigeria Football Elective Congress in 2014 which brought in Delta state born Amaju Pinnick.
