Confirmed: Super Eagles drop to lowest ranking in Africa in nine months!
As exclusively reported by Sportsnow.com.ng earlier this week, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have indeed dropped to their lowest ranking in Africa this year and since December 2023.
FIFA updated its rankings on Thursday morning and Nigeria remains the 39th best in the world but dropped down from fifth in Africa to sixth, both exclusively reported by Sportsnow.com.ng on Tuesday.
In the rankings, Tunisia moved five steps up to relegate Nigeria from fifth to sixth in Africa while the north African country also moved five steps up, from 41st to 36th in the world.
Nigeria started 2024 ranked as 28th in the world and third in Africa following their second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Two months later, Nigeria dropped two places to 30th in the world but still maintained her number three ranking in Africa.
In June when FIFA updated the rankings, the Super Eagles dropped eight places to 38 in Africa and fifth in Africa after unencouraging results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games.
The team dropped a step further the following month to 39th but still fifth in Africa before the latest ranking despite winning one and drawing the other in their two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games.
Morocco, as Sportsnow.com.ng also reported still tops as number one in Africa and 14th in the world, followed by Senegal who moved down two places from 19th in the world to 21st but maintain the number two spot in Africa.
Egypt (31st), Cote d’Ivoire (33rd) and Tunisia (36th) are the remaining top five ranked nations in Africa.
