Corruption in Sports sector: Gara Gombe ready to help EFCC with information, reveals AFN is under investigation

Chairman of Gombe State Athletics Association, Alhaji Shuaib Ahmed Gara Gombe, has lauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for beaming its searchlight on the Sports sector in Nigeria.

Speaking on a programme on Arise TV, Gara Gombe named corruption as the biggest obstacle to the development of Sports in Nigeria and wants the EFCC not to be deterred in the task of sanitizing the sector.

‘I am happy with the intervention of the EFCC in the Sports sector. I want to salute them and also assure them of giving information on those who have looted and are still looting money in the sector,’ said Gara Gombe.

The Gombe Athletics Association chief also revealed that EFCC is currently investigating the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

He revealed how sponsorship money has been diverted and paid into a private account contrary to the terms of the agreement with the sponsor.

Gara Gombe may be alluding to observations and recommendations made by an audit committee report of the AFN, which revealed loads of mismanagement, misappropriation, and incompetence at the federation.

The audit committee even recommended the removal of the Secretary General, Ms Rita Mosindi for incompetence amongst other reasons, a stand the Ministerial Investigative Committee into Nigeria’s negative exposure at the Paris 2024 Olympics also took.
