Delta State Targets Top Spot as Coaches Meet for Niger Delta Games Strategy
Delta State is sharpening its strategy ahead of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, determined not to leave anything to chance after narrowly missing the top spot at the inaugural edition.
According to a report in The Guardian (Nigeria), the state convened a strategic working session with technical officials across the 17 sports scheduled for the festival, which will take place in Benin City, Edo State, from February 20 to 27, 2026.
Team Delta finished as runners‑up to Bayelsa at the maiden Games in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, earlier this year, losing out by just one gold medal. This close margin has prompted the state to intensify preparations to avoid a repeat outcome.
During a meeting on Tuesday, Harrison Ochulor, Secretary of the Delta State Liaison Committee for the Games, urged coaches to ensure that only the most capable athletes emerge from transparent and competitive trials.
He emphasized that the organisers, Dunamis Icon Limited and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), have put in place a rigorous framework to guarantee that talent selection adheres strictly to established rules.
Ochulor also encouraged coaches to thoroughly study and apply the technical booklet provided to them, stressing that it will be essential for effective preparation and compliance during the Games.
