Dikko: Nigerian Women Have Led Nation’s Greatest Sporting Triumphs

To mark International Women’s Day, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has paid tribute to the immense contributions of Nigerian women to the nation’s sporting success.

Dikko highlighted that women have consistently been at the forefront of Nigeria’s greatest achievements, recalling Chioma Ajunwa’s historic leap at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics which delivered Nigeria’s first and only individual Olympic gold medal.

He also pointed to Tobi Amusan’s triumph as Nigeria’s first and only outdoor world champion, underlining the trailblazing role women have played across athletics, football, basketball, wrestling, weightlifting, para sports and beyond.

‘Women have consistently been at the forefront of Nigeria’s greatest sporting achievements. Our first Olympic gold medal came through Chioma Ajunwa in Atlanta 1996, a moment that inspired a generation of Nigerian athletes to believe that global excellence was possible,’ Dikko said.

‘These achievements remind us that Nigerian women have never merely participated in sport; they have led, broken barriers, and set new standards of excellence.’

He stressed that the Commission must continue to create opportunities and strengthen support systems to ensure young girls across the country have platforms to dream, compete and succeed.

Dikko also noted that many of the NSC’s key directorates are headed by women, who he praised for their exceptional work in advancing the Commission’s vision.

‘When Nigerian women succeed in sport, the entire nation moves forward,’ he concluded.
