DR Congo Secures Historic Qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking its return to the global stage after 52 years.
The Leopards triumphed 1-0 against Jamaica in a dramatic intercontinental play-off held in Guadalajara, Mexico, sealing their place in the finals for the first time since 1974.
The match was a tense battle from the outset. Early hopes were dashed when Cédric Bakambu’s fourth-minute strike was ruled offside.
Jamaica responded with periods of possession and dangerous attempts, including Leon Bailey’s shot that struck the post just before halftime.
The Leopards, however, showed resilience, with captain Chancel Mbemba and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi keeping their side in contention.
Despite two more disallowed goals for Bakambu late in regulation time, the DRC pressed forward with determination. The breakthrough finally came in the 100th minute of extra time when Axel Tuanzebe rose to head home a corner, delivering the decisive goal that sent the Leopards to the World Cup.
The match concluded in dramatic fashion, with Charles Pickel narrowly missing a chance to extend the lead in stoppage time. Nevertheless, the final whistle confirmed a historic achievement: the DRC’s long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.
