D’Tigress roar past Cameroon 83-47 to set up semifinal clash Vs Senegal
Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, continued their historic march through the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship with a resounding victory over Cameroon, securing a place in the semifinals and extending their unbeaten streak in the competition to 27 games.
The quarterfinal clash, held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, was billed as a renewal of one of African basketball’s fiercest rivalries.
Cameroon, the last team to defeat Nigeria in AfroBasket play back in 2015, entered the contest with confidence and physicality. But D’Tigress, the reigning four-time champions, responded with poise, precision, and championship pedigree.
From the opening tip, Nigeria seized control of the tempo. Their defensive intensity stifled Cameroon’s rhythm, while fluid ball movement and sharp shooting created scoring opportunities across the floor.
The return of veteran guard Sarah Ogoke added a layer of leadership and experience, as she anchored the backcourt with clutch baskets and vocal direction.
Head Coach Rena Wakama, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to lead a team to the AfroBasket title, praised her squad’s focus and execution.
Key contributions came from Promise Amukamara, whose speed and defensive tenacity disrupted Cameroon’s guards, and Amy Okonkwo, who dominated the boards and stretched the defense with her perimeter shooting.
Ezinne Kalu orchestrated the offense with her trademark composure, while the bench provided depth and energy in crucial stretches.
With the win, D’Tigress remain on course to become the first team in history to win five consecutive AfroBasket titles, a feat that would cement their status as the most dominant force in African women’s basketball.
