D’Tigress roars into 2025 AfroBasket with NSC backing, eyes 5th straight continental crown
As the reigning queens of African basketball, Nigeria’s D’Tigress have departed for Abidjan with fire in their hearts and the backing of the National Sports Commission (NSC)—determined to make history at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
To boost morale and motivation, the NSC has rolled out enhanced welfare packages for the team, including increased bonuses and allowances, reinforcing its commitment to championing athlete excellence.
During a courtesy visit to NSC leadership in Abuja on Tuesday, Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade voiced their firm belief in the team’s potential to lift the trophy again. Later that evening, the NSC top brass visited the training camp to offer personal encouragement to players and coaches ahead of their departure.
‘Every victory starts with a motivated team,’ said Mallam Dikko. ‘We’re stepping up support with better incentives to match their dedication and sacrifice.’
Meanwhile, Head Coach Rena Wakama has unleashed her final 12-player roster packed with star power and fierce determination. Returning stalwarts include Captain Amy Okonkwo, Ezinne Kalu, Promise Amukamara, and Sarah Ogoke, alongside rising forces like Nicole Enabosi, Murjanatu Musa, and Victoria Macaulay.
D’Tigress will square off in Group D against Mozambique and Rwanda, ready to defend their dominance and hunt a historic fifth straight AfroBasket title. Their legendary run includes four consecutive championships—three finals against arch-rivals Senegal.
The tournament kicks off from July 26 to August 3 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. All eyes are on Nigeria’s heroines as they set out to extend their dynasty.
