Eagles B Fall Short in CHAN Opener as Senegal Clinch Narrow Win
Nigeria’s Eagles suffered a narrow 0–1 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opening Group B match of the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Tuesday in Zanzibar.
The tightly contested clash at the Amaan Stadium saw Senegal capitalize on a rare opportunity with just 15 minutes left on the clock. A clever attacking move lured Nigerian goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha off his line, allowing the Lions of Teranga to slot home the game’s only goal—also their only shot on target.
Despite a spirited performance, Nigeria struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances. The midfield duo of Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo showed grit, while defenders Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka worked tirelessly to repel Senegal’s advances.
Mustapha made a crucial save in the 21st minute and was alert again when Senegal threatened from a free kick in the 33rd. The Eagles pressed hard, but Senegal’s disciplined defense thwarted every attempt.
In the dying moments, Senegal nearly doubled their lead with a slick team move, but Ngenge and Nduka were quick to clear the danger.
With this result, Nigeria sit at the bottom of Group B, trailing Congo and Sudan who played out a 1–1 draw earlier. The Eagles will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Sudan, scheduled for next Tuesday at the same venue.
