Edo Queens send defending champions Sundowns packing, face TP Mazembe in semis

Nigeria champion, Edo Queens ended Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ hopes of defending their CAF Women’s Champions League title with a 2-1 victory.

This was the first meeting between the teams and the South Africans’ third match against Nigerian opponents at the finals.

This would be the first time a Nigerian team will beat the South Africans in three appearances.

Sundowns first faced Nigerian opponents Rivers Angels in their second group game in 2021 they won 1-0, they then defeated Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in their opening game in 2022,

Sundowns have now faced West African opposition at the finals for a fifth time, winning all four previous meetings until Saturday evening.

Edo Queens are the 15th different club that Sundowns will be facing at the finals.

The victory not only secured the Nigerians their place in the semi-finals but eliminate the defending South Africans who led from a 24th minute goal by Melinda Kgadiete.

Sundowns held the lead until the dying moments before two added time goals by Edo Queens via Emem Essien and Mary Mamudu.

Edo Queens will now face TP Mazembe in one of the two semi-finals set to take place on Tuesday, 19 November.

The Nigerians will kick off the semi-finals in the earlier fixture before a North African battle between hosts, AS FAR and FC Masar concludes the semi-finals.
